Maryland State Inspections

Is Your Vehicle in Need of a Maryland State Inspection? We Can Help Here at Hamilton Nissan

According to Maryland state law, most used vehicles are required to undergo a safety inspection before being sold or transferred to a new driver. There are approximately 1,600 facilities throughout the state which are authorized to perform a safety inspection, and Hamilton Nissan is one of these facilities. At our service center in Hagerstown, MD, our automotive technicians would be happy to assist you. If you haven't had a Maryland state inspection performed on your car, truck or SUV before, or are simply curious about the inspection process, here's a bit more information for you.

What is Checked During a Maryland State Inspection?

Maryland state law says that most used vehicles should undergo a safety inspection before sale or transfer. This includes cars, light trucks and SUVs weighing 10,000 pounds or less and trailers which are 20 feet in length or less and don't have air brakes.

A full safety inspection may take between one to one and a half hours to complete. During that time, our ASE-certified technicians will check a myriad of items inside and outside of your vehicle. These include, but aren't limited to the following:

  • Steering system
  • Mirrors and lights
  • Door handle latches and hood latches
  • Safety belts
  • Seats
  • Odometer and speedometer
  • Wheels/tires
  • Fenders
  • Electrical systems
  • Fuel system
  • Emergency brakes
  • Bumpers

This is only a partial list of the items checked during a Maryland State Inspection. At Hamilton Nissan, we have a lot of experience with these types of inspections and would be happy to answer any of your questions. Please don't hesitate to ask when you arrive, or feel free to call us ahead of time with any inquiries.

State Inspection FAQs

Q: "How much does it cost to have a Maryland state inspection performed?"

A: At Hamilton Nissan, we offer Maryland state inspections for $95.00.

Q: "What happens if my vehicle fails the safety inspection?"

A: Unfortunately, the Maryland Inspection Certificate cannot be issued if your vehicle fails even one of the safety standards. Any problem must be repaired before the vehicle can be re-inspected. If you have your vehicle re-inspected after repair in less than 30 days since the initial inspection, and you've driven it less than 1,000 miles, we will need to only inspect the defective part.
